Our Land
Bending Bridge Farm is located 10 miles from Mercersburg in south-central Pennsylvania. Our land is nestled between two mountains in a narrow valley called Little Cove. The farm is a total of 100 acres--a mixture of forest, pasture, and hay fields--and approximately 25 acres are tillable for vegetable production. Due to its mountainous surroundings, our land is quite rocky. However, we have access to water for irrigation in the form of a small stream and a pond. We use manure and soil amendments carefully and try to minimize tillage.

By using green manures such as red clover and cover crops such as rye grass, we prevent erosion and improve soil quality. Each year we plant our vegetables in different fields on the farm through a process called crop rotation. This allows the soil to rejuvenate and minimizes pest and disease problems. For organic farmers, the process of improving soil texture, organic matter, and nutrient content is as important as planting the seeds. Careful management of the soil minimizes insect and weed problems and improves the quality of our produce.
